What to check at inspection

A short checklist for looking at a used car you found on WithProof. Everything on an ad is declared by the seller, so check it yourself before you pay.

1. PPSR check

Look at the PPSR certificate on the ad if the seller supplied one, or run your own search on the car’s VIN at ppsr.gov.au. Make sure the VIN matches the compliance plate and the one on the windscreen. The certificate shows money owing on the car and any stolen or written-off record. What a PPSR check tells you.

2. Logbook

Ask to see the logbook. Check the service stamps, dates and kilometres line up with the odometer, and look for long gaps. Receipts help. What to look for in a logbook.

3. Demerit points

Ask the seller to show you their current demerit point balance in their state’s licence app or online account — in NSW, the Service NSW app. Compare it with the number declared on the ad. It takes about 30 seconds. Demerit points explained.

Demerit points are a 3–4 year snapshot, excluding suspensions. Ask when their last offence was.

4. Test drive

Start the engine from cold if you can. Listen for knocks and rattles, check the car brakes in a straight line, the gears change smoothly and no warning lights stay on. Drive at a few different speeds.

5. Under the bonnet

With the engine off: check the oil level and colour and the coolant, and look for leaks, rust, and cracked belts or hoses. Look under the car for fresh drips.

6. A mechanic’s inspection

Before you hand over money, book an independent pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic or your state motoring club.

If something doesn’t add up, take your time or walk away.
